Mary Hines

Mary Hines began her career as an opera singer with the Negro Heritage Choir under the direction of famed soprano Dorothy Maynor, the founder of the Harlem School of the Arts. It was at the Harlem School that Mary discovered she loved to sing and began voice studies with Madame Sachs and later with Louis Edward Smart. At the age of fourteen she began to sing with the All City High School Choir under the direction of John Motley. Ms. Hines has performed at Lincoln Center with the Manhattan Opera Singers in the oratorio King David, Paganini and Potpourri of Musical Scents and Spices all under the direction of Ms. Lois Albright. She was also a featured soloist in Faure's Requiem with the York College Chorus under the baton of Professor David Labowitz and made a special appearance for the United Federation of Teachers Spring Conference under the direction of Mrs. Sylvia Dunsky.

A native of North Carolina, Ms. Hines holds a B.A, in Music Education from York College and a M.S. in Education from the City University of New York. She was a music teacher at P.S. 132 in Manhattan for ten years where she directed the P.S. 132 Glee Club. Later, Ms. Hines worked in the New Jersey Public School System where she directed the Park Avenue Elementary School Chorus and the Freehold Intermediate School Chorus. She is currently the music teacher at P.S. 5 in the Bronx, New York.

Ms. Hines grew up in the choirs of the Junior Church of Convent Avenue Baptist Church where she is currently and has been the director of the Children's Choir since 1986. She is also a soloist with the Sanctuary Choir here at Convent under the direction of Gregory Hopkins and was featured in their presentation of Haydn's Mass in D Minor.
